Scope and Contents of the Materials

The materials in this collection are Thai anti-communist propaganda posters and booklets. These materials were collected by the Kalasin Boy's High School in Kalasin, Thailand from 1967 to 1969 and were almost certainly funded by the United States Information Service.

Biographical Note

George and his wife Chrystal Smith lived and traveled around Southeast Asia for several years. Along with Prof. Constance Wilson they authored the book, "Royalty and Commoners: Essays in Thai Administrative, Economic & Social History."

George Smith has a B.A in History from Whitman College, an M.A in American History from WSU, a Ph.D in Southeast Asian History from Northern Illinois University and an MS in Library Sciences from the University of Illinois.

George and his wife Chrystal sreved in the Peace Corps in Thailand from 1967 to 1969, where they taught high school English in the town of Kalasin. In 1994, they returned to Southeast Asia on an American Library Association fellowship. George trained staff and did planning for the National Library of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. He and Chrystal have traveled to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

George's career has been spent in libraries, museums and archives.

Folder 2: Description: Communist Side (Left) a. Communists use methods giving rewards to old villagers to spy on village for them. Intend not to trust each other and be cautious of one another. Description: Free State (Right) b. In Thailand, the public associate with many different people and are friendly and intimate with neighbors like family.
Folder 3: Description: Communist Side (Left) a. Communists have never given respect to a person of importance. In this picture we see a group of young men gang up and assault (do badly to) a teacher. Description: Free State (Right) b. Thai groups hold respect for a person of importance and teachers gives knowledge to them (students).
Folder 4: Description: Communist (Left) a. Anyone who does not support the communist group, they will seize and place in the kangaroo court and try for a case. Description: Free State (Right) b. In Thailand, the people must find correct legal proceedings and the court will establish laws. They will perceive the person as innocent until evidence or witness can prove that they are truly guilty.
Folder 5: Description: Communist (Left) a. In a communist country people do not have right, every person gets work similar to cattle. Description: Free State (Right) b. Thai farmers love and treasure farm work have worker rights for themselves.
Folder 6: Description: Communist (Left) a. Millions of Chinese people flee out from China go to Heaven of Workers it is because they are sick of enduring the communism. Description: Free State (Right) b. In Thailand the citizens are happy and well and they show happiness and excitement through dance.

Folder 12: Sparkler - Comic book i. This story is about a teacher, who was the first person in the northeast of Thailand, who aided a village, gave them food, and taught them to be loyal while battling against a communist group.
Folder 13: At Utterly The Same Old Wang Small World - Comic book i. This story occurred in China, and it is about the life of an older Chinese person who goes by the name of Old Wang. He experiences different changes in his community due to communists leaders forceful and aggressive methods.
Folder 14: Same Bloodline(Blood Lineage) - Comic Book i. This story is about how young citizens go against the communist authorities (soldiers) to help women, find love, and build prosperity.
