Historical Note: Born in Brooklyn, New York she was the daughter of the late Albert and Mathilda Rosebrock Nurge. She went to elementary schools in Union City, NJ and graduated from Emerson High School. Following High School she worked in New York City and then joined the US Navy Waves in May 1943, and served as a radioman in Hawaii during WWII and was discharged in April 1946 as Radioman Second Class. Following the war she enrolled at the University of New Mexico and graduated with a B.A. Degree, a masters degree was obtained at the University of Chicago, and her PhD. in Anthropology at Cornell University. Ethel did field work in the Philippines, Germany, and among American Indians. She wrote several books and numerous articles for "Current Anthropology". She was a professor at several colleges spending her last 20 years at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
