Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection documents the activities of the Illinois Vocational Association (I.V.A.) and its affiliate division, the Illinois Industrial Education Association (I.I.E.A.) from 1935 to 1973.  Records of annual and board of directors’ meetings (1935-1972) contain minutes, correspondence, resolutions, business reports, membership lists, and programs describing both the I.V.A. and the I.I.E.A.  Various phases in the history of the I.I.E.A. also are defined in the organization’s correspondence (1948-1972).

Supplementary documentation from the American Vocational Association provides information on the national organization’s concerns.  Also important to note are publications which relate to the Illinois Vocational Association.

Collection Historical Note

The foundation for industrial education programs in the United States began with the passage of a federal vocational education law on February 23, 1917.  Its passage brought into being federally supported programs of vocational education conducted by the states as an integral part of public education.  Representing vocational interests in Illinois was the Illinois Vocational Association and its affiliate organizations.

The Illinois Industrial Education Association, a nonprofit organization and one of four divisions under the Illinois Vocational Association, incorporated on January 12, 1935.  The purpose of the association was to establish a sound industrial cooperative training program in order to meet the problems of occupational displacement and technological unemployment in Illinois.  The Illinois Industrial Association provided a service to local communities in promoting the role of industrial education in the total education program for youth and adults.
