Collection Historical Note
Bruce Dickins (1889-1978) was born on Oct 26, 1889 in Nottingham. He grew up mostly in the company of his grandparents in South Lincolnshire. He later went to Nottingham High School and to Magdalene College in Cambridge, where he studied history and old Anglo-Saxon languages. After graduation he taught English at Leeds University. From 1917-1919 he was stationed in France to aid the British army. When he returned he transferred to the University of Edinburgh. Some time later he married Mollie Grierson and they had two children together; one son and one daughter (tragically the son would later die of pneumonia in Uganda). Dickins has served on many committees, written various published articles, and was an avid sports fan. Through his studies he became knowledgable about Old Norse, early Scottish texts, runes, English local history, bibliography, and place-names. Dickins has contributed greatly to many academic fields; including, but not limited to, English, History, Humanities, Museum Studies, and Bibliography.
