Scope and Contents of the Materials

The DuPage Building & Construction Trades Council records date from 1955 to 1984, though the bulk of the material covers the years 1968 to 1979.  A complete run of monthly Council meeting minutes (1966-1979) and of weekly Business Representatives meeting minutes (1970-1979) are in the collection.  The majority of the records are subject and correspondence files that deal with a variety of topics: politics and labor legislation, wage rates, jurisdiction disputes, pickets, and the AFL-CIO’s Building & Construction Trades Department.  There are no financial records in the collection.

For additional information researchers should consult the Will-Grundy Building Trades Council Records (RC 152), the Elgin Trades Council Records (RC 153) and the Regional History Center’s Guide.

Collection Historical Note

In 1911 the DuPage Building & Construction Trades Council was formed.  As with similar councils, the DuPage organization worked to unite the various unions involved in the construction industry.  Through the years the Council’s members have represented such labor groups as: sheet metal workers, electrical workers, asbestos workers, plumbers & pipefitters, brick layers & plasterers, painters, glaziers, masons, and roofers.  The Council continues to perform several functions including overseeing picket lines, settling jurisdiction disputes between unions, and lobbying for labor legislation.  It is affiliated with the AFL-CIO’s Building & Construction Trades Department in Washington, D.C.

The mission statement for the group states that, the goals of the council are to promote a unionized construction industry withing DuPage County; to maintain harmony and cooperation between all crafts, contractors, general contractors, and the customer; to help supply the skilled labor necessary to complete the owners project on time, on budget, and with the best value for their dollar; and to help our members maintain a standard of living that will allow them the security and happiness every citizen should be entitled to in exchange for a fair days work.
