Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Mary Robinette Kowal Papers consist of printed (paper-based) manuscripts of novels, short stories, short story manuscript critiques, correspondence, and miscellaneous materials from conventions, award ceremonies, and personal notes.

Collection Historical Note

Mary Robinette Kowal was born on February 8th, 1969 in North Carolina.  She is an American science fiction and fantasy author, as well as a puppeteer.  In 2008, she won the Campbell Award for Best New Writer.  Since then, two of her works have been nominated for Hugo Awards in the Best Short Story category: “Evil Robot Monkey” (2009) and “For Want of A Nail” (2011), "For Want of A Nail" (2011) won a Hugo Award. Kowal’s debut novel “Shades of Milk and Honey” was nominated for the 2010 Nebula Award for Best Novel.

Kowal has worked as a professional puppeteer since 1989.  She has performed on Lazytown, the Center for Puppetry Arts and Jim Henson Pictures. She founded her own company: Other Hand Productions.

Mary Robinette Kowal has done voice acting for audio books.  She has also served as Vice President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
