Catherynne M. Valente was born in 1979 in Seattle, Washington and is a New York Times Bestselling Author. She is best known for her science fiction and fantasy novels, short fiction, and poetry. She graduated high school when she was 15 and she went on to UC San Diego and Edinburgh University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in the Classics. She worked various jobs before becoming a novelist, such as a professional fortune teller, librarian, waitress, and actress. Her first novel, The Labyrinth, was published in 2004 and her young adult novel, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (2010), became the first self-published (crowdfunded) novel to achieve a major literary award, the Andre Norton Award for YA literature. She has also received the James Tiptree Jr. Award, Rhysling Award, Mythopeotic Award, Hugo Award, Locus Awards and many others. She currently lives on an island off the coast of Maine with her husband and a collection of pets.
