Collection Historical Note

Nnedi Okorafor (also known as Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu) is a Nigerian-American author whose works entwine African culture into science fiction and fantasy for both children and adults. During her high school years, Nnedi was a pro at tennis and excelled in science-based classes.  Her later diagnosis of scoliosis and the surgery to repair it left her unable to go after her athletic career.  During her recovery, she reinvented herself through her hobby of writing and later pursued writing as her occupation.

Born in the United States to two Nigerian immigrant parents, Nnedi's unique upbringing and eye-opening experiences have given her an excellent ability to meld her hertiage and culture into her novels seemlessly. Nnedi won a Hurston-Wright literary award in 2001 for her story Amphibious Green and she later published two young adult novels, The Shadow Speaker and Zahrah the Windseeker. The Shadow Speaker won the Carl Brandon Parallax Award, a Booksense Pick for Winter 2007/2008 award, and a Tiptree Honor Book award, while Zahrah the Windseeker won the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa. These books were also finalists for many awards.

Nnedi's first adult novel, Who Fears Death, won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2011.  Her other young adult novel, Akata Witch, and her short story collection, Kabu Kabu, were picked as the best books to read for their publishing year. Nnedi's novels, Who Fears Death and Arata Witch, have been proposed for films and a producer is currently writing up a screenplay for her novel, Zahrah the Windseeker. Hollywood film director, Tchidi Chikere, also filmed Nnedi's screenplay, Wrapped in Magic, in Nigeria in 2011.

Nnedi earned her Bachelor's degree in Rhetoric from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, her Master's in Journalism from Michigan State University, and her Master's and PhD in English from the University of Illinois in Chicago. She is also a graduate of the 2011 Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop.  She is currently an associate professor of creative writing and literature at the University of Buffalo (SUNY) and she lives in between Buffalo and Illinois with her family.
