Scope and Contents of the Materials

The records in the Aurora Trades and Labor Assembly (ATLA) Collection are arranged in five series and span the years from 1901 to 1984.  Series I contains constitutions, by-laws, annual reports, minutes of meetings, and a brief history of the ATLA.  There are some gaps in the meeting minutes and several meetings in the late 1970’s are on cassette tapes.  Financial records (1904-1883) comprise Series II.  Included are income and expense records, audit reports, bank accounts, and per capita dues records.  Partial documentation of ATLA affiliates is contained in Series III: officers, attendance records, and credentials.  Series IV contains correspondence (1908-1979).  Subject files (1957-1984) are in Series V.

Collection Historical Note

The Aurora Trades and Labor Assembly was organized April 27, 1892 and received its American Federation of Labor charter in 1901. At the time it was chartered the ATLA included thirty nine local unions as members. Among the major concerns of the Assembly during the first half of the twentieth century were the right to organize, hours of work, wages, and working conditions. The merger of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Insudtrial Organizations resulted in a new charter for the ATLA granted in 1958. The ATLA supports and promotes the interests of its members and provides information, seminars and workshops on topics of interest to its membership: OSHA, social security, labor history, labor-management relations, and health issues. In addition, the Assembly is an integral part of the Aurora community and is active in local politics, industrial development, mental health, and other community action programs. At the present time the ATLA has over thirty local unions as members and continues its affiliation with the Illinois and National AFL-CIO.
