Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Dixon Chamber of Commerce records are organized into three series:  Minutes & Committees, Programs & Events, and Subject Files & Publications.  The collection documents the Chamber’s activities from 1920-1980, although two earlier documents are included in Box one, folder one: a copy of the original incorporation papers (1887) and the resolution that changed the organization’s name (1915).

The first series, Minutes & Committees, contains Board of Directors Minutes (1920-1979), Minutes of various committees (1964-1979) and financial information (1925-1966).  Additional financial reports and committee minutes are located within the Board minutes.  Due to a fire in the Chamber’s office, some of the Board minutes are singed and difficult to read.

The second series, Programs & Events, consists of background files on the Chamber’s Annual Dinner (1967-1971), Consumer Complaints (1967-1978), the New Teachers Welcome (1965-1967), and Business Management Seminars (1977-1978).  Related to these files are those in the third series, Subject Files & Publications.  Subjects covered in this series are Airport Planning (1928-1931), Dixon’s Centennial (1930) and Promotional Pamphlets, Maps and Guides of Dixon (1953-1967).  Researchers  should  note  that  the collection contains no material on Dixon’s annual Petunia Festival.

Collection Historical Note

On April 18, 1887, the Citizens Association of Dixon was formed to promote the economic, civic, and moral welfare of the people of Dixon. Later, on April 16, 1915, the Association changed its name to the Chamber of Commerce of Dixon. Since then, the Chamber has worked to attract new industries to Dixon, sponsored Dixon’s Centennial, maintained the Memorial Arch, and mediated consumer complaints. The Chamber has, also, devoted its energies to attracting conventions, improving highway access, and promoting Dixon as a scenic tourist spot. Despite two fires in their office (in December, 1924 and in June, 1984), Dixon’s  Chamber of Commerce continues to pursue its goal of uniting the city’s citizens in order to build a solid community and a good business climate.
