Scope and Contents of the Materials

The records in this collection document many of the activities of the DeKalb-Ogle County Central Labor Council from 1964 to 1982.  Types of records include: constitution, by-laws, minutes, correspondence, membership information, newsletters, and newsclips.  Financial reports were usually included in meeting minutes.  The minutes, although incomplete, provide excellent documentation of the issues important to Council members.  Extensive correspondence files and material from the Illinois F of L-CIO (1970-1983) and the AFL-CIO (1971-1982) provide the opportunity to compare local Council concerns with state and national positions.

Collection Historical Note

The DeKalb-Ogle County Central Labor Council may have been originally organized in 1959 or 1960 but there are no records available to indicate the Council was able to continue as a viable organization. Early in 1964 discussions regarding reactivation of the Council were held and over the next two years enough support was found to revive the Council. The first meeting cf the reactivated DeKalb and Ogle Counties Central Labor Union was held on May 4, 1966. Joseph Rakowicz, AFL-CIO staff representative for this region, conducted the meeting. Participants elected officers and trustees and formed a Committee on Political Education. Council officers elected were: George Ramer, President; Donald Schor, Vice President; James Skelton, Recording Secretary; Pauline Peura, Financial Secretary; Wilmer Baker, Sergeant at Arms; Joseph Lindenmayer, Treasurer. A newspaper account of the meeting reported forty locals from DeKalb and Ogle counties were represented.

The Council has remained active since its reorganization and continues to represent the concerns of working people in the two counties. It has been involved in local political campaigns and community issues as well as making its position known on state and national issues. Approximately a dozen locals are affiliated with the Council.
