Scope and Contents of the Materials

There are four bound volumes in the collection covering the period 1851 to 1939 with some gaps. The volumes provide a record of township taxes collected, funds disbursed, election of supervisors, and development of roads. Minutes of meetings for the period 1886 to 1939 complete the collection.

Collection Historical Note

In 1849 DeKalb County voters chose to organize the county into thirteen townships and selected Orange as the name for the township in which the village of DeKalb was located.  County supervisors changed the name to DeKalb Township in 1850 because a township in another Illinois county had already been named Orange.  In that same year township voters elected Thomas R. Hopkins as first supervisor.
