Collection Historical Note
Anne Estella Sarah Penfold Mathews was born on August 9, 1857 to Captain William Withey Mathews and Jane Wallas Penfold. Anne married Lord High Chancellor George Cave, 1st Viscount Cave, in 1885. Lord and Lady Cave had four children who all died in infancy, three sons and one daughter. Lord Cave’s resignation as Lord Chancellor had been accepted on the day of his death (March 29, 1928) making him an earl. The widowed Lady Cave was then named Countess Cave of Richmond. Having no children who lived to adulthood, the viscountcy became extinct on Lord Cave's death, as did the earldom when his widow died on January 7, 1938.
