The materials in this collection fall into three record series.  The materials in the first series, Intercollegiate Athletics, document Northern's affiliation with various intercollegiate athletic associations including the N.A.I.A., N.C.A.A., I.I.A.C., C.M.U., and MAC.  Information on a number of coaches and athletic directors from the 1960's through the 1990's are found in this series.  Men's basketball and football are also traced in the collection through programs, media guides, fact books, and official scores and rosters.  Baseball, golf, track, tennis, wrestling, swimming & diving have limited documentation. Researchers interested in the history of intercollegiate athletics should check the University Archives' photo and publications indices under specific sports or surnames.  Additional information can be found at the Sports Information Office.

A second series in these records documents Women's Athletics at Northern.  Team events are documented in a collection of score books and media guides for basketball, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.  Social and sports events are recorded in  scrapbooks from the Women's Athletic Association, the Women's Recreation Association, and Delta Psi Kappa (Alpha Lambda chapter), the Physical Education professional women’s honorary society.  More information on the history of women's athletics at Northern can be found in the Student Papers and Student Activities records series.

The materials in the third series document the Secretary of Education’s Commission on Opportunity in Athletics [Title IX at 30].  Northern Illinois University’s Intercollegiate Athletics Director, Cary Groth was a member of this Commission which was active from mid-2002 to early 2003.
