Administrative/Biographical History
Carol Emshwiller was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1921. She spent most of her childhood in Ann Arbor and a couple of years in France. Her father was a professor in the linguistic department and her mother was a housewife. She has three brothers whom she adores. She attended the University of Michigan where she studied music and eventually art. She met her husband, Ed Emshwiller, when she was an art student. They lived in France for a year after they got married and attended the Beaux Arts school. Carol did not begin writing until after she was thirty and had her first child. She would go on to have another two children. Carol met science fiction writers through her husband Ed, who started his career as a science fiction illustrator. She began writing and selling science fiction stories as well as taking classing and attending workshop on science fiction writing. She taught at New York University in Adult Education and retired in 2003. In the winters she lives in New York City and in the summers she lives in the Sierras in California. Carol Emshwiller in known for her feminist writing in science fiction and has published numerous short stories and novels. She has won honors such as the Nebula Award and the Philip K. Dick Award. In 2005 she won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. Carol passed away on February 2, 2019.
