Administrative/Biographical History
Mary Robinette Kowal was born on February 8th, 1969 in North Carolina. She is an American science fiction and fantasy author, as well as a puppeteer. In 2008, she won the Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Since then, two of her works have been nominated for Hugo Awards in the Best Short Story category: “Evil Robot Monkey” (2009) and “For Want of A Nail” (2011), "For Want of A Nail" (2011) won a Hugo Award. Kowal’s debut novel “Shades of Milk and Honey” was nominated for the 2010 Nebula Award for Best Novel.
Kowal has worked as a professional puppeteer since 1989. She has performed on Lazytown, the Center for Puppetry Arts and Jim Henson Pictures. She founded her own company: Other Hand Productions.
Mary Robinette Kowal has done voice acting for audio books. She has also served as Vice President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
