Denied a recount Hare was nominated by the Democratic Party. Three lawsuits were filed. The first was an objection to his candidacy on the county level which he won at the electoral board level. Then the case was heard in circuit court on appeal and was lost. Following that, attorneys for the Democratic Party filed suit in Federal Court in Chicago and also filed an appeal in Elgin at the State Appellate Court. Hare filed a suit pro se at the county circuit court. The appeal in the appellate court was not heard and the suit which Hare filed at the county level was mediated. At the same time, Hare ran a write in campaign and was reelected by over a thousand votes with 7,000 voters participating. Hare started his second term as Assessor on January 1, 1974.
Hare was involved in community activities such as the Northern Illinois Township Assessors' Association, the Involved Citizens Association, the McHenry County Assessor's Association, the Crystal Lake Jaycees, American Legion, the First Congregational Church, and McHenry County Young Republicans.
