Records Relating to Graduate School | Northern Illinois University

In 1949 the university began preparing for the start of a graduate program establishing guidelines for the library, faculty qualifications, and classroom requirements.  The Graduate School officially began to operate in 1951 when it offered summer courses leading to a master's degree in education.  The first doctoral programs were not approved until 1962.  Records in this collection include correspondence, subject files, graduate catalogs, graduate faculty handbooks, brochures and programs, newsletters, Graduate Council files and minutes, as well as other committee records.  Meeting minutes are added on a regular basis.  The archives also maintains a copy of every master's thesis and doctoral dissertation through 2008, and graduate music recitals from 1962 through 2000.
